DEHRADUN: To prevent plastic and polythene use in U'khand, the state government has decided to pay people who return their plastic products. The buying of these products will be done through private agencies but the cost per product is yet to be decided. This decision was taken in a meeting recently held by CM Harish Rawat.

In another initiative, the PWD, along with the city administration will now buy polythene for use in laying of roads in the city. Out of the 300 metric ton of garbage collected, almost 50% of it is made up of plastic. According to sources, the authorities have constructed a 500 meter stretch near Kanak Chowk in the city using plastic waste as one of the raw materials for trial and now plan on taking it to the next level. This initiative is expected to help not in waste management but also will also improve the quality of the roads. However, it is still unclear if the two provisions are interlinked.

Nitin Bhaduria, commissioner, Nagar Nigam said, "We already have a contract with PWD for selling the plastic to them and we still haven't received anything in writing about the decision taken at CM's meet."

According to the decision taken, no cost has been decided yet for the plastic and polythene products as well as other details like the venues where people can sell these products. Renu Bisht, a resident of Jakhan said, "I don't understand how to go about this. Earlier, it was clear as to where we have to sell the plastic as well as the cost. We can't be expected to keep carrying the plastic around. It seems better to sell it to PWD because they can get it collected whereas in I am not sure how a private agency will function."

This is a pan state scheme by the government to ensure that locals do not throw their plastic waste on the roads. Rajinder Singh, a local scrap collector told TOI,"It is very unlikely that people are actually going to sell their plastic waste on their own. The most convenient method is to sell it to collectors like us and that's how people have been generally disposing off the domestic plastic waste. Also I fail to understand why so many government agencies are buying the plastic? What will they do with it? They should use collectors like us getting the plastic to them." It has also been decided to levy a fine of Rs 1000 on anyone who is seen dirtying a public place.
